Making Sense of DEIBJ
Lately you may be hearing a lot about DEI, DEIB, EDI, D&I, and my personal favorite, JEDI. What does all of these acronyms actually mean and how are they different? Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice and Belonging are all interrelated concepts that have become increasingly important in today’s workplaces and society, particularly as it relates to building a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment. It is important we understand each term in an effort to foster a sense of belonging for ourselves and others:
Diversity- refers to the range in differences among individuals, including differences in identity, race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and more. Embracing diversity means recognizing and valuing the unique perspectives, experiences and backgrounds that each person brings to the team or organization.
Equity- refers to the fairness in the distribution of resources, opportunities, and benefits. Achieving equity means addressing historical and structural discrimination and ensuring access to opportunities and resources for individuals or groups from historically marginalized communities.
Inclusion- refers to creating a welcoming and respectful environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and supported. Inclusion encompasses practices and policies that allow everyone to participate fully and contribute to the organization’s goals.
Belonging- refers to an individual’s sense of feeling welcomes and accepted, and having a sense of connections to others and the broader community they’re part of. Achieving belonging means creating an inclusive environment that nurtures meaningful relationships, shared experiences, and sense of purpose so that people feel more connected and committed to the organization’s goals
Justice- refers to the fair treatment of individuals in society, particularly as it relates to the legal system. Social justice seeks to address systemic inequalities and promote inclusive decision-making, policies and practices that ensures everyone in society has a fair access to benefits, justice, and opportunity.
Bonus term: Access- refers to the opportunity to fully participate via access to resources, services, and opportunities that can help them grow or succeed. Mostly used in Educational and Healthcare work spaces; it includes access education, quality healthcare, fair job opportunities, housing and more. These items are required for individuals to reach their full potential.
